What makes cork cells float
In its natural form, cork is also a very good fire retardant, although cork dust is actually extremely flammable because here the cell structure has been broken down. Impermeable: Cork has a magic chemical in its cell membrane that makes it completely impermeable to liquids and gases. Does cork burn? Cork is a slow combustion material. Also, when burning, the smoke that it releases is not toxic. However, TCA itself has no harmful effect on humans, other than ruining your wine.
The going rate is about 10 cents per cork. You can try to charge more if you have some type of rare cork you think is worth it, but if you just want to move your merchandise, price accordingly. There are, however, individual differences from tree to tree. It is the air which fills the cells in the cork that makes it an excellent thermal insulator.
The same protective principle can also be found in other natural products, such as wool and feathers, and in industry, such as double glazed windows, for example. However, none of these materials have such a high level of insulation as cork.
Each cork stopper is made up of around million airtight cells. Among them is a gaseous mixture which allows it to be compressed to around half its thickness, without losing any flexibility, and to be decompressed and return to its original shape. This is what is called an elastic memory.
Packed closely together, the cells are generally arranged in radial rows and separation is achieved by structures called lenticels. These pore-like structures allow gases to be exchanged between the plant stem and the outside environment. The layer of dead cells formed by the cork cambium provides internal plant tissue, including the vascular system, with extra insulation and protection.
